Chapter

Twenty-One

Astra

* * *

Much too soon, I’m awakened by the sudden absence of a warm body. My eyes snap open as a familiar voice shouts my name. “Astra, run!”

Princess is positioned in front of me, her lips peeled back and a low snarl echoing in the air. A demon stands before her with a dagger pointed in our direction. He lunges left, and my faithful zebub blocks him.

“Thane, where are you?” I whip my head wildly from side to side to find the source of that voice. Dusk has settled over the land, and only the sound of pounding hooves directs my frantic search. At least a dozen more demons on zebub gallop toward the mountains with a familiar form stretched across two of the animals’ haunches.

“Thane!”

I squint to make out the retreating marauders. Thane lies perfectly still as they drag him away. Terror steals the air from my lungs. What are you doing? Fight! I shout through our bond.

I can’t. One of these damned demons bit me. It’s a paralytic.

Bands of steel tighten around my chest, squeezing the remaining air from my lungs. This is ludicrous. I am not some maiden in distress; I am Atropos, I am Fate. Stealing my nerves, I focus my attention on the male demon jabbing his blade at my four-legged friend.

Concentrating on the power that resides in my core, I imagine the gilded thread running across my skin. The string begins to dance and wriggle until it crawls across my palm and takes form between my fingers. Weaving the thread between my thumb and forefinger, I stretch it until it’s taut.

The scissors begin to snap, and I watch in amazement as they squirm and twist up my arm and land in my palm. Your time is up, my friend. I snip the gilded thread, and the demon falls.

Princess lets out a satisfied chuff and butts the demon’s still form. His head rolls to the side, vacant eyes staring up at the darkening sky.

Power surges through my veins, and I turn my wrath on the fading figures ahead. No one will take Thane from me. Reaching for Princess’s reins, I hoist myself onto the saddle. Digging my heels into her flanks, she gallops after the raiders.

I’m coming for you. I turn my thoughts to our mystical link.

No, Astra. Go back to the dark lord’s fortress. He’ll keep you safe.

I’m not leaving you.

Gods, Astra, don’t be so foolish. I’m immortal. His furious growl reverberates through my skull.

You promised to end this, Thane, you swore. I won’t let us relive another lifetime of this torture. Squeezing my eyes closed, I concentrate on the swell of power, on the shears and gilded thread now returned to their proper place on my arm.

A surge of energy blossoms, livewire crackling through my bones. I draw in a deep breath and focus the power on the raiders escaping with my mate. Mine. A dark voice within my depths awakens.

Come to me. Come to me, Thanatos. I throw my hands out, and the ground rumbles beneath me.
